Replacing Multiple Units with a Single Walk-In Freezer

Clients contacting us looking for refrigerator or walk-in freezer hire sometimes have to be led through the process of deciding just how much portable cold storage they need. A client can call thinking that multiple units would be best when a single walk-in unit would be better. We take the time to work with clients to figure out just the right solution to each of their individual challenges.

The ACR Journal published a post in August 2017 illustrating a similar principle. In the post they described a pet supply company that had been using 29 freezers to store some of their perishable products. They eventually worked with a vendor who explained that a single walk-in freezer would give them more than enough storage space while still costing them less in the long run.

Though the pet supply store was dealing with permanent freezer capacity, we often see the same thing in portable cold storage. For example, let's compare renting multiple refrigerated vans to a single walk-in freezer unit. The cost differences can be quite substantial.

Renting Multiple Vans

Let's say you're thinking of renting three or four refrigerated vans to accommodate expansion of your facilities this spring. Refrigerated van hire is prohibitively expensive when you consider that you're not just renting cold storage space. Rather, you are renting cold storage and the vehicle on which it's transported. And because you're renting an entire vehicle, you are not getting as much storage space per pound. The value just isn't there.

Granted, the convenience of pulling multiple refrigerated vans up to your location, parking them, and forgetting about them is nice. But you still have to do the driving; you're still responsible for the fuel and any damage should you have an accident.

Renting a Large Walk-In Freezer

Compared to refrigerated van hire, renting a single walk-in freezer offers a lot more value. For starters, a walk-in freezer is all storage space and nothing else. There are no windscreens or side windows. There is no engine, no tyres, no chassis, no transmission. A walk-in freezer is simply a big, insulated box with an attached compressor.

This means your storage capacity is greater pound-for-pound. Where you might need to rent three vans to accommodate your needs, a single walk-in freezer could be more than enough keep your perishables at the right temperature during the expansion project.

Next, a walk-in freezer is installed inside your premises rather than parked outside. This limits access to only those people inside your building. You don't have to worry about security when you go home at night. You don't have to worry about people wandering through the neighbourhood and trying to break in.

You may think you need multiple cold storage units when a single unit would be a better option. But how do you know without talking to an expert? You don't. So before you agree to rent portable cold storage space, contact Icecool Trailers. We'll help you figure it out.
