Fridge Trailer Hire: Rules to Live By

Fridge Trailer Hire
11-May-2017

Calling Icecool Trailers to arrange fridge trailer hire is just the first step in keeping things cold when you do not have access to a permanently affixed unit. Whether you are renting a fridge trailer for your daughter's wedding, to meet the needs of your catering business, or just to accommodate cold storage during business expansion, you undoubtedly want to maximise your space and keep things cold at the same time.

With more than 20 years in the fridge trailer hire business, we have learned a few things about the efficient use of temporary cold storage. We've come up with a list of 'rules to live by' that should help our customers make the most of their rentals.

Fridge Trailer Hire 'Rules'

Keep the Trailer Level

Our technician will level your fridge trailer on delivery as part of the set-up process. Do your best to make sure it remains level throughout the entire rental period. Being slightly off is not going to hurt the trailer or its compressor, but it could cause problems for you depending on what you're storing inside.

To ensure your trailer remains level, mark out sufficient space around the unit that can act as a safe zone. Do not allow any cars, trucks, forklifts, or other vehicles within that safe zone – even when you're accepting deliveries. It only takes one bump to throw a trailer off level.

Load Your Trailer Appropriately

Guidelines for maximising cold storage efficiency in a rented fridge trailer are similar to what you might do at home. For starters, understand that cold air falls while warm air rises. The coldest place in your fridge trailer will be right near the floor in either of the back corners. This is where you would store items that have to be the coldest.

Keep your items as far away from the door as you possibly can as this is the one vulnerable point in cold storage. Remember that opening the door allows cold air to escape. The area immediately around the door tends to be the warmest of all.

Make Judicious Use of Shelving

You might not realise it, but a fully packed refrigerator is actually more efficient than one with just a few items. Densely packing items together provides a natural insulation that prevents said items from absorbing warm air and putting more work on the unit. The best way to take advantage of this principle with a rented fridge trailer is to use shelving judiciously.

Arrange the items on your shelves in such a way as to allow them to be packed tightly together. You might want to group similar items on the same shelf, given that they will cool at the same rate and remain at the same temperature for longer.
